There's a New Obamacare Repeal Bill in Town

There's a New Obamacare Repeal Bill in Town
From Lifehacker - September 15, 2017

Republicans in Congress have to pass their repeal of the Affordable Care Act by September 30, or else its not going to happen. That means Zombie Trumpcare has risen again, and at least a few lawmakers think it has a chance. Take a look at whats in this bill, because you might want to make a few phone calls.

The deadline applies because thats when budget reconciliation rules expire. You see, Republicans have a slight majority in both the House and Senate, but not enough votes to beat a filibuster. Under the budget reconciliation loophole, they can pass a law with only Republican votes if they can get more than 50 percent of each house on board, and if the bill can be phrased as a reshuffling of money rather than all-new policies. These goals are theoretically possible, although no ACA repeal bill has fulfilled them so far. After September 30, this option disappears and both houses need a 60 percent majority to pass any new health care bill.

As the deadline looms, some congresspeople are moving on. Bernie Sanders has unveiled a bill that sketches out a single-payer system where everybody would get free or nearly free health care, in exchange for somebodyits unclear whopaying higher taxes. And a bipartisan bill is on the way that would provide a band-aid fix to stabilize insurance markets. (Those markets are unstable because the President keeps threatening to withhold cost-sharing reduction payments required by law.)

The Last Ditch Attempt

Here are the details on the down-to-the-wire repeal bill. Its known as the Cassidy-Graham bill, sponsored by Senators Cassidy, Graham, Heller, and Johnson.
